Hijab Style

In Islam, a hijab (Arabic for "cover") refers to any clothing that covers a woman from head to toe, signifying modesty. However, in the Western world, the term hijab commonly denotes the traditional Islamic headscarf for women.

Wearing a hijab is a key aspect of Sharia, Islamic law, which dictates that Muslim women should dress modestly. Today, the term hijab can apply to any item of clothing that identifies a woman as Muslim, whether it be a scarf, a burqa, or a long coat.

Hijab According to Sharia

Sharia scholars have varying opinions on what constitutes proper hijab attire. Some insist that a woman must only leave her home in a long dress or coat that falls from her shoulders to her ankles. This view, however, is not universal, and many theologians allow for some flexibility in women's clothing choices as long as the following guidelines are met:

1. The clothing must cover the entire body except for the hands, face, and possibly the feet.
2. The clothing should not be form-fitting, especially around the bust, waist, and hips.
3. The fabric must not be transparent, revealing the body's shape or skin color.
4. Women's clothing should not resemble men's attire.
5. The clothing should not be scented, brightly colored, or adorned with jingling or shiny decorative elements.

In today's world, the concept of "hijab" evokes a range of associations. It signifies a woman's relationship to her faith and the outside world. Currently, hijab generally means Islamic attire or clothing that meets the standards of Sharia. However, the hijab signifies more than just Muslim attire; following Islamic dress codes also requires adopting an Islamic lifestyle and behavior (inner hijab).
